Details of the 2003 Event:

The Global Family Potluck
It's all about family!

Congressional Sponsors of the OneDay holiday are cooking up a first-ever event for one family from every country, with a youth messenger from every state as their American Hosts. We'll be holding it from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m., right here in our capital. Every guest family is asked to bring a national dish, and a family photo of their country's leader to post on a Hopes For Peace Wall along with artwork by the country's children. We are hoping all heads of state will sign the children's pledge, which asks that they observe the special OneDay holiday in their country and that they will work harder than ever to build a world that is safe for every mother's child. Already the presidents of a number of countries have signed on. And President Clinton and President George W. Bush are among those endorsing OneDay.

Our Global Family Potluck is intended to help all the world's leaders realize once again that virtually every parent everywhere desires a world of peace and sharing for our children. But while we differ over how to achieve it, here is a beautiful opportunity to begin. Every journey begins with one step. We believe peace can begin with OneDay.

Please join us in celebrating the OneDay2003 Global Family Potluck, by gathering with friends or family or folks of another culture for a potluck meal on January first. And here are some more ideas for celebrating this special day. January 1 - it's about more than food and football!

  • Pledge in writing to use nonviolent means in 2003 to solve conflicts
  • Invite someone of another culture to break bread with me
  • Refrain from road rage
  • Be nice to my children and acknowledge my responsibility to help build a world that is safe for every child
  • Speak to or smile at everyone I see on the street that day
  • Match or multiply the cost of my January first meals in a gift to the hungry
  • Avoid violence of all kinds, including watching cruel and violent entertainment
  • Do something festive and celebratory, like ringing a bell, giving a gift, singing a song
  • Give thanks for life on earth
  • Call my parents
  • Reach out to someone in another country
  • Promise to learn about current events affecting my world, and to vote.

On January first let's send a strong message to all the people of the world demonstrating our commitment to help calm international and intercultural tensions as we build an inter-related, indivisible, compassionate and cooperative human society. One human family.
